GNGTS 2017 - Call for abstract Session 1.2 on “Active tectonics: data and models”

Dear colleagues and friends,
we would like to invite you to submit an abstract to Session 1.2 on “Active tectonics: data and models” of the GNGTS meeting to be held in Trieste, Italy, on 14-16 November 2017.

Session Description:
Over the past two decades, traditional geological field observations on active and potentially seismogenic faulting have been largely complemented by a growing body of geodetic and interferometric data, as well as by in situ stress data, subsurface data, and most of all by high-quality seismological data set on both seismic sequences and background seismicity. This large body of interdisciplinary information has often been used to test consolidated ideas and models. Nevertheless, researchers should be aware that geodetic and seismological data refer to spatial and chronological scales that cannot be easily reconciled with the evidence from long-term geological observations. As a matter of fact, our knowledge of the geometry, kinematics, dynamics and seismogenic potential of the active fault systems in Italy and elsewhere in the world remains partial and fragmentary, and as such it is often the object of lively discussions and controversies.
The session intends to stimulate such a discussion, especially among young scientists having different expertise and using different methodological approaches. We especially encourage contributions that discuss the concurrent role of different survey methodologies and document the areas where an integrated approach is more promising. Contributions on study areas from everywhere in the world are welcome, but we look especially forward to presentations discussing alternative geometric and seismotectonic interpretations for the most recent Italian earthquake sequences.

Giusy Lavecchia (Univ. Chieti, CRUST, IT),
Gianluca Valensise (INGV, Roma, IT),

Deadline: Abstracts must be sent by 17 September 2017 through the submission site (

Please consider submitting an abstract, and contribute to the success of this interdisciplinary and hopefully animated session.

We look forward to seeing you at GNGTS.
Best wishes,
Giusy and Luca
