The Geological Society of America, in partnership with the Chamber of Geological
Engineers of Turkey, and the Turkish Association of Petroleum Geologists, is
proud to present TECTONIC CROSSROADS:
Evolving Orogens of Eurasia-Africa-Arabia a meeting in Ankara, Turkey, 3-8
October 2010.
Turkey is situated at
the junction of the Eurasian, African, and Arabian plates. The dynamic interplay
of tectonics, sedimentation, metamorphism, and magmatism has created a geologic
tapestry blessed with significant natural resources and a populace facing
notable seismic and volcanic hazards. These characteristics have been developed
into meeting session themes being chaired by world experts. See technical sessions
Local
hosts are Middle East Technical University (METU) and the Directorate of Mineral
Research and Exploration Institute. Presentations and dialogue among experts and
students will examine the processes creating the region's geology. Four days of
sessions are structured around mid-meeting field trips on Wednesday, designed to
ensure that all international participants experience some of the geology and
culture of central Turkey. Pre- and post-meeting field trips focus on various
sectors of the region's tectonic geology. See field trips
