INTERNATIONAL PROJECT UNESCO has approved an international project dealing with the establishment of a network of researchers to study in a multidisciplinary way the structural and geological relationships between basement and volcanoes. The project is in the framework of the International Geological Correlation Programme of the International Union of Geological Science and is coordinated by A. Tibaldi of University of Milan-Bicocca (Italy), co-leaders are M. Garcia (Spain), A.M. Lagmay (Philippines), and V.V. Ponomareva (Russia).This 2001-2005 project - "Effects of basement structural and stratigraphicheritages on volcano behavior and implications for human activities" (IGCP project n. 455) - focuses on the reciprocal influence exerted by volcanoeson their substrate and by the basement on the volcanoes in different geodynamic settings, and to assess the role of this influence in determining natural geological hazards such as eruptions, landslides and earthquakes.The project plans to have annual field workshops, and symposium at international congresses in 2002 and 2004.
