Goldschmidt2020: Virtual Registration Open

-

Società Geologica Italiana

Dear Author,

Registration for the Virtual Goldschmidt Conference has now opened. This message provides an outline of the new meeting format.

While there is no way for a virtual conference to deliver the same experience as an in-person event there are some significant pluses to running online. The societies can offer a lower registration rate for the whole community, and therefore, an even greater ability to connect with those previously excluded by the costs of attending. We also massively reduce the carbon footprint of the meeting in this format.

Goldschmidt is a community as well as a conference and we know you will want to support those who have worked so hard to build sessions and participate to share your contributions if at all possible. If the virtual conference is a success it will enable further development online in more normal times, increasing the reach and inclusivity of the event going forwards.

By default, your abstract will remain live in the program and be added to the archive even if you do not register. If you wish your abstract to be cancelled* and removed from the program and archive please use the button at the base of this message or send us an email at this address by April 25th.

We can now provide some more information about how we will be enabling authors to present their work

Features of the virtual conference:

  • A strong science program showcasing the exciting progress in our field over the last year.
  • An Early Career Program to support and develop those starting their careers in geochemistry.
  • The registration rates will be $100 (USD) for standard participants and $25 for student delegates who are members of the GS, EAG, or an affiliated society. For non-members, the rates are $170 for standard participants and $95 for students.
  • Virtual-mentoring initiative.
  • Live plenary lectures presented twice daily to reach multiple time zones.
  • The panel discussion and talks of Theme 15 will take place - with some modifications to allow for the format. These are likely to be a conference highlight.
  • A number of the conference workshops will be run as virtual satellite events.
  • The local team on the islands are looking into ways of incorporating some "virtual Hawaii" into the event (Aloha shirts not compulsory).
  • We hope to include content and contacts from our exhibitors and sponsors in the virtual format.
  • We are also looking into virtual social events as we know how important these are to Goldschmidters everywhere.

Your scientific program, necessarily a snapshot from a rapidly evolving scenario (in keeping with the trend of the times!):

  • The conference events will be held on the scheduled dates June 21-26th.
  • Scientific communication will take place through presentations - there will be no distinctions between talks and posters.
  • Presentations can be uploaded in different, simple to create, file formats with a maximum file size (details to be confirmed).
  • Presentation files should be uploaded two weeks before the conference, and these will be published for viewing by the registered participants during this time.
  • In the week of the conference, there will be designated time slots for discussion on each session. These may be online chats or live video panel sessions. The online chat mode would allow people to place question / comments before the live sessions as well.
  • Technical support and management of the session would be provided leaving conveners in the role they would have normally as moderators, ensuring the respectful and collaborative tone of the event.
  • The presentations will be available for 30 days after the conference for registrants.

We are excited about many of the possibilities opened up by this format and appreciate your support while we try to work out the details of how best to serve the community.

Sincerely,
Jacquie
