Session Details
The 2016-2017 seismic sequence of Central Italy occurred as a series of moderate to large destructive earthquakes originating a well-known system of normal faults located along the Apennines spine. Immediately after the first mainshock on August 24th, 2016 and those of October 26th and 30th, a large amount of high-quality multidisciplinary data was collected including surface faulting, seismicity distribution, focal mechanism, GPS and Insar data.
Elaboration and interpretation of these extensive sets of data yield the development of well-constrained models which describe fault geometry, kinematics, and rupture mechanisms, as well as the complex interaction between active faults and fault growth processes.
This seismic sequence represents a first order sequence in terms of magnitude and seismic energy release in extensional settings. Thus, the forthcoming results from the ongoing multidisciplinary analysis provide an excellent opportunity to better understand the nature of the earthquake faulting processes, current tectonic evolution, and seismic hazard of densely populated regions of the Mediterranean.
In this session we welcome contributions from a broad range of disciplines focused on Geology, Paleoseismology, Seismology, Rock mechanics, GPS and Insar data, and interpretations relating of the seismic sequence.
