Distinguished lectures in Earth Sciences - Worldwide overview of Aggregates and Aggregate Mining in Megacities, an example from İstanbul, Turkey

In addition to the increasing population and structuring in the growth/development process of a country or megacity, the obligation to maintain industrial and infrastructure investments makes aggregate one of the most consumed building materials per capita. Multiple factors come into play when evaluating the aggregate industry; many of which are crucial to the development of this line of commerce. Besides quality, quality continuity, durability and innovations (ways to increase resource efficiency, production, product range, productivity, usage of waste materials), recent researches and development efforts are generally directed towards new and more efficient uses of aggregates. On the other hand, many research projects are focused on economic, environmental, political and societal issues for optimum management of aggregate resources and production of concrete, asphalt production etc. with limited environmental impact.
İstanbul is one of the megacity in the world which has a high aggregate production (90 million tons/year). In order to maintain efficient and sustainable aggregate resources in İstanbul and its surrounding region, plan and program should be reviewed and new strategies evaluated to facilitate the sustainable management of resources. In this regard, the importance of existing resources and their possibilities, determining operable new resources and their management, have been considered.
Atiye Tuğrul is currently Head of the Applied Geology Division and responsible for the Natural Stone Laboratory at the Department of Geological Engineering of Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa, where she is also the IUC Coordinator of academic relationships with the University of Naples  Federico II. 
She mainly works on the quality of natural stones (Aggregate, marble etc.), the stability and rehabilitation studies in the quarry area, the engineering properties of rocks and soils, the weathering of rocks and the protection of stones used in historical buildings. She is the Author of more than 150 publications and has been keynote/invited speaker at many international and national meetings.
Between 2010 and 2014, Atiye was the first woman Vice President for Europe in the International Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment (IAEG). She is President of the IAEG Aggregate Commission since 2004, after serving as a Vice President in 1998-2004, and is also a member of the IAEG Commission on Building and Ornamental Stones.
She has participated or coordinated  many national and international research projects, mostly on natural stones. On behalf of Turkey, she participated into the EU's 7th framework project on Aggregate Resource Planning (SNAP-SEE).
In Turkey, Atiye Tugrul is a member of the National Resources and Reserves Reporting Committee (UMREK) of the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources,  and a founding member of the Association of Geosciences, Mining and Metallurgy Professionals (YERMAM).
