BSRG Field Trip 2017 - Coastal to Deep Water Sedimentology of the Culm Basin, UK

-

Società Geologica Italiana

20th-22nd October 2017

Organised by: BSRG Sedimentary Research with Plymouth University

We are delighted to invite you to the 2017 BSRG field trip lead by Dr Matthew Watkinson from the University of Plymouth and EPI Geoscience. This 2 day field trip is open to postgraduate students (MSc and PhD) and early career geoscientists (from academia and industry). It is a very good opportunity to meet sedimentology-related researchers from all over U.K and Europe in an informal environment. This trip will focus on processes, stratigraphy and facies deposited from the latest Devonian to late Middle Carboniferous in shelf, deltaic and coeval deep water systems of the Culm Basin along the spectacular coastal exposure of North Cornwall and Devon. We'll also investigate beach/shoreface facies, stratigraphy and processes in superbly exposed Pleistocene raised shoreline facies.

Field trip outline:

Day 1 (20/10): Travel to Bideford in Devon, staying at Ultimate Adventure Centre. Short introduction.

Day 2 (21/10): Morning: Saunton Sands (uppermost Devonian shelf sandstone). Afternoon: Westward Ho! (mid Carboniferous fluvial-deltaic cycles) – the place where Facies Analysis was invented !

Day 3 (22/10): Widemouth Bay (sediment density flow and slump deposits). The trip will end at 2.30 pm.

Data covered:

We will look at facies deposited from beach and deltaic, through shelf and deep-water environments, with spectacular 3D sedimentary  structures.

Some important controversies will be adressed:

(i) How to differentiate lacustrine from marine turbidites?

(ii) What is the nature of the Culm Basin (thrust top, foreland or extensional basin)?

(iii) What deformation is caused by tectonics or gravitational processes?

(iv) Implications for petroleum exploration and production.
