Carissimi associati SGI,

Cordiali saluti,

La segreteria
Dear colleagues,

We am pleased to advertise a fully funded three-year PhD position at Università Roma Tre, starting on 1 January 2027, on the tectonic evolution of the Karakoram in northern Pakistan.

Title: Tectonic evolution of the Karakoram in northern Pakistan: from collision to exhumation and uplift

The project will investigate the kinematic framework and temporal evolution of continental collision, exhumation, and crustal uplift in the Karakoram and adjacent regions of northern Pakistan. The study area extends along a transect from the Swat Valley and the Main Mantle Thrust, across the Kohistan arc block, with focus on Nanga Parbat, to the Eurasian margin along the Main Karakoram Thrust.

The successful candidate will work at the interface between structural geology, metamorphic petrology, geochronology/thermochronology, and geodynamics. The project will integrate field observations, microstructural analysis, metamorphic petrology, geochronology, thermochronology across different closure temperatures, and interpretative modelling. The PhD includes support for fieldwork, laboratory analyses, and conference participation.

The project will be supervised by Claudio Faccenna and Federico Rossetti at Roma Tre  as co-supervisors. The project also involves collaborations with Paolo Ballato at Roma Tre, Giuditta Fellin at ETH Zürich, Hummad Ghani at the University of Göttingen, Valerio Olivetti at the University of Padova, Taylor Schildgen at GFZ Potsdam, Muhammad Sajid at the University of Peshawar, Dr. Sher Sultan Bag at International Karakorum University of Gilgit and GFZ Potsdam.

The expected results will provide new constraints on the tectono-metamorphic, thermal, and exhumation history of the Karakoram, contributing both to the geological reconstruction of northern Pakistan and to a broader understanding of continental collision processes.

Candidates with a background in structural geology, tectonics, metamorphic petrology, geochronology, thermochronology, or related fields are encouraged to apply.
