About the Project:
The University of Trieste invites applications for a fully funded PhD fellowship to advance research in sustainable energy solutions through the geological storage of green hydrogen and the exploration of natural (white) hydrogen deposits. This interdisciplinary project combines geoscience, energy engineering, and environmental sustainability to address critical challenges in the transition to a hydrogen-based economy.
Research Objectives:
1. White Hydrogen Exploration: Identify and characterize natural hydrogen accumulations in geological formations (e.g., Northeast Italy) using advanced seismic interpretation, 3D modeling, and geochemical analysis.
2. Green Hydrogen Storage: Design and optimize safe subsurface storage systems in depleted gas reservoirs, integrating geomechanical modeling (FLAC3D), mineral interaction studies, and leak-detection technologies.
3. Synergistic Solutions: Develop strategies to repurpose depleted hydrogen sites for green hydrogen storage, reducing infrastructure costs and environmental impact.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct fieldwork, laboratory experiments, and computational modeling (e.g., Move, FLAC3D).
- Collaborate with industry partners and international consortia (HyStories-EU).
- Publish findings in high-impact journals and present at conferences.
- Contribute to regional initiatives (North Adriatic Hydrogen Valley, FUSE Project).
Candidate Profile:
Essential:
- Master's degree in Geology, Geophysics, Environmental Engineering, Energy Sciences, or related fields.
- Strong interest in sustainable energy and subsurface systems.
- Fluency in English (written and spoken).
Desirable:
- Experience in reservoir modeling, geochemical analysis, or hydrogen technologies.
- Proficiency in geoscience software (e.g., seismic interpretation tools, 3D modeling) and/or programming (Python, MATLAB).
Benefits:
- Competitive stipend (€1,200 month net) with annual research budget.
- Access to cutting-edge labs, field equipment, and industry partnerships.
- Training in hydrogen geology, 3D modeling, and project management.
- Opportunities for international mobility and conference attendance.
