Full title: Navigating a changing world with tohu and maramataka: a decolonial approach to impacts on Aotearoa from Antarctic environmental change

Speaker: Alyssa Thomas

Alyssa is a PhD candidate dually supported by the Antarctic Research Centre and Te Kawa ā Māui at Te Herenga Waka/VUW. She has just returned from a month of fieldwork at Scott Base, Antarctica, looking at how Māori methods of tirotiro (observation) could be applied in the diverse Antarctic environment. Maramataka promotes connection and atunement to our natural environment. Observing and connecting tohu (signs, indicators) serves as guidance to practises of kaitiakinga (protection), hauora (health) and connection.
For this seminar, Alyssa will reflect on her experiences of this fieldwork which was shared with her two supervisors, Dr Holly Winton and Prof. Ocean Mercier.
