Carissimi Associati SGi,
Cordiali saluti,
La Segreteria SGI
Dear colleagues,
Applications are now open for a PhD scholarship supported by ENI at the University of Pavia, Italy, for the PhD project entitled Integrated workflow for investigating the timing of diagenetic fluid circulation in clastic sequences. The project will be supervised by prof. Andrea Di Giulio and co-supervised by prof. Luca Colombera.
This project focuses on the reconstruction of diagenetic and thermal histories in clastic sedimentary systems through an integrated petrographic, geochemical, thermochronological, and diagenetic modelling workflow.
The research will combine traditional approaches used in diagenetic studies — including optical and electron microscopy, fluid inclusion microthermometry, and porosity analysis — with advanced analytical techniques and instrumentation, such as MicroRaman spectroscopy and LA-ICP-TOFMS mass spectrometry. The diagenetic evolution of clastic reservoirs will be simulated by providing forward diagenetic modelling software with a robust, analytically constrained dataset on the chronology of diagenetic events, fluid chemistry, geothermal gradients, and burial history.
The project will focus on three main research lines:
- Honing the integration of petrographic, geochemical, and fluid inclusion datasets for the reconstruction of diagenetic histories and fluid evolution
- Investigating how depositional facies control porosity distribution and diagenetic evolution
- Analysing compaction processes and timing as indicators of burial evolution in clastic systems
- The project builds upon established workflows developed at the Laboratory of Fluid Inclusion Analysis and Thermochronology (LAIFT) of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences of the University of Pavia, and finds applications to reservoir characterization and reconstructions of basin evolution and fluid-rock interactions.
The successful candidate will join an active research environment with expertise in clastic diagenesis, sedimentology and basin analysis and modelling.
