Hello, listeners,

I just posted my episode with Steve Brusatte on the dinosaurs that survived the asteroid.  Brusatte is Professor of Palaeontology and Evolution at the University of Edinburgh and author of The Story of Birds.

It is widely known that birds are dinosaurs, but perhaps less well known (I didn't know) that most of the bird species living when the asteroid struck were wiped out.  In the podcast, Brusatte describes what the fossil record tells us about the survivors — beaks rather than teeth, very rapid maturation, digestive systems with a crop and gizzard, and small body size.  He then speculates on how each of these traits would have helped them withstand the post-impact cataclysm and the ensuing period of cold and darkness.

I hope you enjoy listening.

Oliver
