Hello, listeners,
I just posted my conversation about how plutons form with Keith Klepeis, who is a professor in the Department of Geography and Geosciences at the University of Vermont.
By studying the Median Batholith in the Southern Fiordland region of New Zealand, he was able to trace wide conduits, narrow dikes, and mushroom-shaped sheets that transport melt from the base of the crust to the upper crust where plutons are emplaced. He chose to work on this batholith because it has been tilted by movement along the nearby plate boundary Alpine Fault so as to expose about 20 km of continuous section. As he explains, though, the rugged mountains, densely covered by temperate rainforest, make this into a challenging 3-dimensional puzzle.
I hope you enjoy listening.
Oliver
