Dear colleagues,
we are pleased to invite you to contribute to Session S05 – Crystallisation in magmas: insights into storage processes, conduit dynamics, and lava emplacement, which will be held during the 7th A. Rittmann Conference, taking place in Catania (Italy) from 7 to 9 July 2026.

Crystallization is a fundamental process controlling the physico-chemical evolution of magmatic systems, from deep storage through ascent to surface emplacement. Beyond driving magma chemical evolution, crystallization exerts a first-order influence on magma rheology, transport, and eruptive behaviour.
Key topics include crystallization within magma reservoirs, where mineral chemistry and textures provide constraints on pre-eruptive conditions, timescales, and magma dynamics. Understanding near-equilibrium and disequilibrium crystal nucleation, growth, and aggregation in magmas is crucial for unraveling magma dynamics and eruptive behaviour.
This session invites contributions focused on crystallisation in magmas, with particular emphasis on nano- to micro-scale processes in both natural and experimental systems. We encourage studies that integrate textural and chemical data using advanced analytical techniques. Contributions employing cutting-edge 3D textural analyses and innovative in situ, time-resolved (4D) experiments are especially welcome.
Studies addressing magma ascent and conduit processes are also encouraged, particularly those exploring how nano- to micro-scale crystallization affects magma rheology and degassing, ultimately influencing eruptive style. The session further encompasses crystallization during surface emplacement, including lava flows and lava tubes, and its role in controlling flow dynamics, emplacement processes, and morphology.
Overall, this session aims to foster cross-disciplinary discussion among observational, experimental, and modelling approaches, bridging petrology, volcanology, and rheology to provide a comprehensive view of crystallization-driven magmatic system evolution.
