7a Conferenza A. Rittmann - Call for Abstracts Session 'S16 - Humans and volcanoes: a long history of interaction'

The history of volcanology traces the progressive development of concepts and methodologies that have shaped the scientific study of volcanic phenomena, while historical volcanology specifically relies on documentary and visual sources to reconstruct past eruptions, their products, and their impacts. Both perspectives require a multidisciplinary approach that integrates geological, historical, and archaeological evidence. Within this framework, the proposed session promotes interdisciplinary research on the long-term interactions between volcanic activity, volcanic landscapes, and human societies, particularly in the Mediterranean basin and its eastern extensions. From prehistory to the present, communities have engaged with volcanic environments by exploiting raw materials for technology, architecture, trade, and artistic production, while negotiating the hazards and opportunities posed by active and dormant volcanic systems. Contributions are invited to examine the relationship between volcanic eruptions and human societies through case studies, regional syntheses, or comparative analyses, with particular attention to socio-economic, urban, cultural implications and resource exploitation.All the contributions from physical sciences and humanistic studies are welcome.
